A Wahatoya

"Wahatoya"

Welcome to the Spanish Peaks Wilderness area in Southern Colorado. This is the west peak rising 13,631 ft above sea level as seen from the 'Highway of Legends' south of La Veta, Colorado at 7,030 ft. The east peak is on the far left side that is slightly visible from this particular view. It rises to 12,688 ft. and is connected to the west peak.
The two peaks have traditional and religious significance to American Indian tribes including the Apache, Comanche, and Ute. The common Indian name appears in at least three different spellings in various accounts, reflecting different renditions of oral expression. These are "Wahatoya", Huajatolla" or Guajatoyah". This is widely reported to be a Ute name meaning "breasts of the earth", but is in fact a Comanche name translating to "double mountain". Blue and Bear Lakes are easily accessed popular campgrounds. They offer some great high freshwater trout fishing. Off-road Trinchera Peak camp trail turns off the regular maintenance road to a trail that is good for hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, ATV, and 4-WD is after you trail your way up to nearly 13,510ft. above timberline. Prints and various items are now available at george-a-garcia-photography.com Feel free to comment, add, like, and share! Thanks!
